Several sets of tests are now available related to line breaks, word breaks and hyphenation in CSS3 Text and Unicode Standard Annex #14 (Line Breaking Properties). Some of the tests are rewrites of previous tests in the Internationalization Activity test suite. There are also many new tests.

The previous set of tests in the Internationalization Activity test suite looking at white space handling for various non-Latin scripts has been rewritten and published today. The new tests are based on behavior described in the CSS3 Text Module. These tests explore, in particular, how browsers render text in Asian and South-East Asian scripts when white space appears at the end or beginning of a line in the source text.

A list of tests and a snapshot of results for major browsers is available. The tests are also published in the i18n-css3-text test suite in the W3C Test Harness.

The results page is the latest to be adapted so that the results shown are automatically pulled from the W3C Test Harness database when the page is displayed. This functionality has now been extended to all test results pages using the new format.

A large number of additional tests related to bidirectional text support in HTML5 have been added to the Internationalization test suite.

These tests look at support for the new auto value of the dir attribute, and there is one more test related to behavior associated with the br element.

The tests are published in the i18n-html5 test suite in the W3C Test Harness as well as being accessible in the usual Internationalization Activity format.

These tests check whether a user agent follows the CSS 2.1 specification when dealing with character encodings for CSS style sheets. The test results have been updated to show the behaviour of the latest versions of major browsers, and the tests have been added to the W3C Test Framework.

An initial set of new tests related to bidirectional text support in HTML5 have been added to the Internationalization test suite. More tests will follow shortly.

These tests look at support for the new bdi element, and at behavior associated with newlines.

The tests are published in the i18n-html5 test suite in the W3C Test Harness as well as being accessible in the usual Internationalization Activity format.

The Internationalization Activity home page has recently been ported to WordPress. This means that the URIs for the various RSS feeds have changed. You can find the new links at the page W3C I18n news filters and RSS feeds.

The current URIs will continue to work for a short while, to support the transition, but you should change as soon as possible.

URIs for category filters have also changed, as have those for search key text within posts (useful for finding the history of a particular article or document). The latter have been converted to tags.

The HTML and CSS text direction tests in the Internationalization Activity test suite have been updated as follows:

• HTML5 and XHTML5 were added as new test formats
• tests now use strict DOCTYPEs
• reference graphics in the vertical text tests were improved
• the order of tests related to browser chrome was changed

In addition, a new results page was created for the tests about vertical text.

Other changes behind the scenes include gathering of all tests into a single PHP file (generatehtml.php is no longer used). Code in the PHP file was also streamlined.

The CSS webfonts tests in the Internationalization Activity test suite have been updated as follows:

• a set of WOFF font tests were added
• HTML5 and XHTML5 were added as a new test formats
• tests now use strict DOCTYPEs
• results pages were consolidated and updated to reflect latest browser version behaviour, and to make it easier to see the assertions used for the tests

The HTML language declaration tests in the Internationalization Activity test suite have been updated as follows:

• tests were simplified, and now rely only on :lang for language detection
• HTML5 and XHTML5 were added as a new test formats
• tests now use strict DOCTYPEs
• results pages were updated to reflect latest browser version behaviour, and to make it easier to see the assertions used for the tests
• some small errors in the tests were corrected

Other changes behind the scenes include gathering of all tests into a single PHP file (generatehtml.php is no longer used). Code in the PHP file was also streamlined.

The general improvements to the test and results pages mentioned above will be added to other tests over time.

The HTML and CSS character encoding tests in the Internationalization Activity test suite have been updated as follows:

• new tests were added to examine behaviour related to the byte-order mark and better represent the current detection algorithm for HTML5
• HTML5 was added as a new test format
• tests now use strict DOCTYPEs
• results pages were updated to reflect latest browser version behaviour, and to make it easier to see the assertions used for the tests

Other changes behind the scenes include gathering of all tests into a single PHP file (generatehtml.php is no longer used). Code in the PHP file was also streamlined.
